Tax Deduction for Us Unfortunate Infertiles

KB just reminded me of this so I am reminding you all -- make sure to claim everything you've spent on IF treatment this year, including meds, trips back and forth to the RE (you get 24 cents per mile), even all the money you spent on the stupid pregnancy tests -- it's all deductible if it exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (we spent over $30K this year, so fuck yeah, we qualify. It would be more than that, even, if I could find the rest of our receipts.).

Here's the link to the IRS publication: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf

  1. I love that this is where our ridiculous chain of emails took your brain. Quite the non sequitur.

  2. Thanks, Mangles. I was wondering about this. I think we spent $40 or $50k last year ... after a while, I didn't want to know anymore. Unfuckingbelievable.

  3. We definitely deducted it all. Another interesting note, our accountant read this list of things you can deduct. Included was in case you do donor eggs/sperm or syrrogate, you can include legal fees, etc... I thought wow... I wouldn't have thought of that. Guess you should keep track of everything!

Last year I made a spreadsheet on my computer & kept track of all doc visits (IF or not) and bills, whether they'd filed insurance & what we paid. It was a way to keep us from being billed extra by docs, but at the end of the year, it made it really easy for taxes. I'm going to do that again this year!

  5. We don't qualify for any of that. Not even for the adoption tax credit. What's frustrating is that although we make enough to not get those deductions we have to live in two cities for our jobs 'cause the economy is so freaking bad. We really make a lot less than it really is. Stupid government taxing the middle class like we're millionaires.

  6. Ladies, how did you claim your IVF fees?
My accountant told me we can't deduct that...

  7. hope2b ... sorry hun, but your accountant is WRONG. The IRS publication specifically says you can deduct IVF costs. Now, if your total costs do not exceed 7.5% of your total income, you can't deduct. For instance, if your household income is 100,000, anything over 7,500 you spend in medical costs is deductible. So, if you spend 20,000 in medical costs, you can deduct 12,500. Any questions, feel free to email me.

  8. Momsie is correct. Print out the publication (link is in my post) and tell your accountant to suck it.
