KB Newsflash: First Ultrasound

Ok guys, after two weeks of waiting and worrying since my first and only beta...it's U/S day!

There are two sacs, each with one little dude in there, both with heartbeats.  At first, the doctor said that #2's HB was kind of slow, but then looked at it again and said, "actually, it's not as slow as I thought it was."  (I couldn't see the HBs at all.  I forgot to ask my husband if he could, since he's a Radiology resident and had a better angle on the screen.)

But, I have something new to worry about (of course I do!)  One is measuring at 6wks4days and the other at 5wks5days.  I'm not worrying about losing #2 in the next couple of weeks, but if #2 makes it to, let's say 10 weeks...and then dies, it's more likely to interfere with #1 and we could lose them both.  UGH!  I just wanted to go in there and have a "normal" ultrasound.

Anyway, the doctor said we could come in for another U/S next week or just wait the 4 weeks until the 10wk U/S.  My husband said, without hesitation, "one week."  LOL...I guess the waiting has been getting to him more than he let on.

If #2 grows at a normal rate, even if it's still smaller than #1, then we should be able to breathe a little easier.  If it continues to grow slowly (or not at all), we're probably looking at having just one that's viable.  One is great of course, I just don't want to lose both.

My next U/S is next Tuesday, the 23rd...only 6 days, woo!  (My DR was out on Wed.)

  1. Glad you could see heartbeats! You should call the nurse and ask what they were. Hoping both keep going! It does sound very reassuring for at least one of them though! Good luck! Keep us posted next wk!

  2. I just texted my husband. He said the DR didn't measure the rate, but was kind of just eyeballing it. He also said the DR didn't measure the gestational sac and some other measurement that my husband says Radiology usually does. They just did crown to rump.

bbchi - Have you and your sister's uterus had the first ultrasound yet? I feel like that would have happened by now?

  3. KB- so happy for you. Were you crying at the u/s? I think I would be balling. It must beautiful to see. I'm sorry the news is a bit mixed, but sometimes when things seem abnormal, everything turns out fine and then when the doctors say everything is good, something happens. So who knows? I hope #2 catches up. I also hope you can find something to take your mind off your worries a bit. Let us know if you find a good distraction!

  5. Barging in to say...

If you had your beta at 14dp retrieval and waited 2 weeks for u/s then you are exactly 6 weeks. Which means...that number 2 at 5w5d is measuring right on track and number 1 is a little big at 6w4d. Also, when they are this tiny it is very easy to be off on the measurements. The tiniest amount can be +-3 days. I think the fact that you saw two heartbeats this early on is a very good sign. Be happy! Celebrate!

  6. Anonymous, thanks for your encouraging input. Unless you are D@ve, you're not barging in. :D All are welcome!

Beta was actually 14dp5dTransfer (not retrieval), so I think #1 is actually on track and #2 is behind. I did have implantation bleeding twice, about 48 hours apart...so it makes sense that one would be lagging behind a bit. I'm not too worried, but I know that we may still have a hurdle or two.

I didn't cry today...I'm still working on finding my emotions for this. (I put them away so long ago.) The doctor said I should be "cautiously optimistic"...to which I replied, "I'm good at that." I'm not freaking out, I think this is probably going to turn out ok for at least one of the little dudes. But I know we're not out of the woods yet. It's a fine place to be in for now. :)

  7. KB---yay! How amazing to verify the heartbeats!! I'm sure that's a relief (but I know the worrying never stops!) good thing your next u/s is less than a week away! Can't wait for an update!

  8. My sister's uterus will be scanned 2/24. Will be 6w4d then so hoping for a definitive-ish result. Although I am tempted to sneak her into my office this wknd and scan her myself. But that might be a bit strange. Plus I don't know how to trace the heartbeats or use this machine to measure. Next time make them trace the heartbeat. I think some RE's are a little quick w/the scans. My friend who had twins said her doc said that one "probably wouldn't make it" at her early u/s. It did.

  9. bbchi - How can you possibly resist scanning her? (Your first beta was even higher than mine!) The doctor asked today if my husband had sneaked me in for an ultrasound yet...he hadn't. He says they're starting to "crack down" on people doing that sort of thing, I guess. Laaaaame! ;P

  12. KB - That's great news overall!! There is always something to worry about though. I hope the smaller embryo catches up, I've heard of this happening. I'm glad you don't have to wait too long for the next u/s.

  13. I love good news! That's awesome, KB - go twins! I know what you mean about putting away emotions. I know if I do get pg w/ FET that I'll wait until the u/s to truly be excited, then 12 wks, then 20 wks, then...ah, the drama never ends for IF girls!

  15. Congrats KB! I completely get cautiously optimistic. I was that way until just before second US at 8weeks when we got the bad news. I was just finally starting to relax about things. Guess I shouldn't have. I LOVE that you are going in next week and not waiting two week or to the 10 week mark. Go DH for pushing for that.
