Elisabeth Rohm Opens Up About IVF

Elisabeth Rohm's IVF Confession
I appreciate Elisabeth sharing her story...further lessening the taboo nature of IVF/ART.

  1. Help, I posted this elsewhere in your blog and realized no-one would probably see it. Need advise asap! Anyone know how long 180IU lasts (.18mL)? Can a dose this low (12 shots over about 12 days, does it build up) be enough for a false pos.? Was taking some to boost fertility, friends had it for hcg diet, I'm now over 3 weeks late, have had 3 pos tests? Dr. on transvaginal sonogram saw a thing that is either a blood clot or 3 week embryo (said uterine lining was thin, so probably not upcoming period), hard to see much, it's so early. Have nausea, exhaustion so badly cannot get out of bed (have an 11 year old also) Gave my male partner one shot of 180IU, his preg test was negative (very amusing scene). Is this a real preg, thoughts?
Did I mention I'm living in 3rd world country where the rainbow-riding nitwits could qualify as brain surgeons and nurses have 5th grade educations and take a two-month course in (apparently) lying and screwing up everything they touch with their filthy, ungloved, chipped nail polish, bacteria-breeding hands? Why would I have a clot anyway, why can't the Dr. just tell me if it's a blastocyst/embryo or not? Blood clot should be linked with upcoming period, which my uterine lining does not suggest is a possibility. What 5mm thing is vacationing in my uterus? If it's not an embryo I would like it to seek alternate accommodations. My blood-work (supposed to be ready at 5 yesterday) remains not ready. I'm just waiting for it to come back and tell me I'm an 95 year old male with prostate cancer, rrr. (Another scumbag dr. recently told me my 11 year old had toxic shock syndrome and renal failure and could die in 24 hours to con me into a hospital for what turned out to be a harmless skin rash, may he rot in hell, so I"m really worried.) Now I'm also feeling a few crampy symptoms, bled with son from 5 weeks to 9 weeks, should I now worry about miscarriage (no bleeding, just twinges)?

  2. Very interesting, "Anonymous"...your story sounds harrowing. Please keep us posted on your results. Sorry, we don't have any way to help you know about the tests or whatever it is that has taken up residence in your uterus. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

  3. Hi, "Anon" again, hoping this will post with my login name (am now dumb enough to be a nurse here, along with crampy, weepy, exhausted, and now weird uterine fluttering). Got current lame-ass dr. on phone the other day, said results weren't ready but call back in 5 minutes. I did, and of course no -one answered. I thought today someone might pick up the phone but it's another damn holiday (work, what's that, ever?) so no response. Am vampire pale with exciting new blue veins running all over my swelling breasts (am popping out of a G cup, for the love of God, pretty much need to wear a backpack to keep from tipping over), and was of course promptly sexually harassed for daring to take said breasts out in a public place by 4 delightful men blocking the way to the bathroom I desperately needed. Snarl. Thanks for reading, you have no idea how much I appreciate it, will let you know what happens, or at the rate things are going, the possible embryo will be able to type the answer for me before my doctor gives me an answer.

  4. Dr. still won't pick up phone, pee stick still pos, friend is driving me to dr. tomorrow (literally cannot walk the 10 whole blocks to get there), and have now been bitten by a damn kitten that got in my house (sorry about the rhyme), so have that to worry about too. Have kept down 2 cheese sticks in 48 hours, thank God have monster breasts to burn for energy. This bites (just like the psychotic little kitten).

  5. Wow, traveltrip1 ... you certainly are having quite the time of it. LOL ... sort of. :)
Not sure what you have (blood clot or embryo) but I wish you luck. Having dealt with medical "professionals" in a 3rd world country, I sympathize with you.

  6. Thanks, I have one other questions for you (your profile said you're 40 too, but didn't see you as author to read up on results, hope all went well). If this is real preg, and seems like it, as still pos. on pee tests, don't think the hcg shot would last this long and cause these symptoms: do you know if there is any positive correlation between speed of conception/trying to TTC period and quality of eggs? I'm 40 so worried about all the obvious issues, wondering if the fact this seems to have worked on the first try (sorry if that sounds obnoxious, I was expecting to suck up IVF anyway) can mean I'm still shooting decent eggs, if there's a negative correlation or none at all? Don't have any IVF profile for that, was planning workup in other country to check myself out, am in shock at the moment. Conceived son 2 weeks after wedding (gave up pill the night before), but was only 28, so doubt that's relevant to egg state today. When can a sonogram or blood work show if the embryo is ok or possibly has problems/same for miscarriage issues? First husband died, hence the gap in TTC. Love that Joan the unicorn post! What country were you rotting in? I once got quite ill in Tibet and had better luck than I'm having here, grrr.

  7. I think you could be pregnant. My understanding is the HCG shots should be out of your system in about a week. I'm not sure when you took the last shot. Most doctors won't confirm a pregnancy by ultrasound until they can see the heartbeat at about six weeks. If you are over three weeks late and are still getting positive pregnancy tests, you probably are pregnant since the HCG won't delay your period. I hope it all works out well for you.

What country are you in? Are you an American living abroad?

  8. I don't know of any scientific correlation, but if you were able to get pregnant that quickly, then I think it sounds like your eggs are pretty good quality. That's my unscientific opinion. :) I did conceive through IVF and delivered a healthy baby who is now 11 months old; I'm 44. There are special ultrasounds you can take with trained technicians where they look for specific indicators of birth defects, like Downs. I think they're done at 16 or 20 weeks, but I can't remember exactly any more. If you Google "nuchal fold test" you can read up on it; that's one of the tests they do.
If you want to go a step further, you can do an amniocentesis that will give you pretty accurate information. Not sure when you can do that, I think it's in the 2nd trimester, again if you Google it I'm sure you'll find the details.
I was in China, about 20 years ago. Yikes, I didn't realize it was so long until I just calculated it.
Good luck, I agree with the poster above that it sure sounds like you could be pregnant.

  9. Hey! Thanks for your comment on my blog! Ironically, we did our 3rd fresh cycle (4th fresh overall) at RMA! I loved them! I think we just might end up doing retrieval with whatever we get as I have 3 cycles covered 50% with my current insurance and then we can switch insurance plans in Jan to a new insurance and have 3 cycles covered 50% with them. ANYWAY, I loved RMA! They were my favorite clinic. Great care, great news, smart doctors. I hope for the best for you! Runningmama from More Room in My Heart!

  11. I know this if off topic but I'm looking into starting my own blog and was curious what all is required to get setup? I'm assuming
having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I'm not very web savvy so I'm
not 100% positive. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
